What's new: On July 21, Crusoe and ON.energy announced a partnership to deploy 5 gigawatts of patented AI UPS™ technology across multiple hyperscale campuses. Commissioning starts this year and runs through 2027.

The problem nobody priced in: During training, thousands of GPUs ramp up and down in synchronized bursts — switching between high and low draw hundreds to thousands of times a day. Crusoe's release describes load patterns "unlike traditional facilities." If unmanaged, those swings propagate back through the interconnection point into the transmission system.

The fix: ON.energy's AI UPS™ is a medium-voltage uninterruptible power system that sits inline between the grid and the data center. It decouples the facility — riding through voltage faults without disconnecting while smoothing internal GPU load swings so the grid sees stable, predictable demand.

The timing: The deal lands six days after Crusoe and Lancium announced a separate 1-gigawatt campus in Childress, Texas — part of a contracted pipeline the company puts at 4.9 gigawatts, with development plans exceeding 40 gigawatts. Power infrastructure is no longer a footnote in the pitch deck. It is the product.

What this doesn't solve: Communities still face water use, land use, and ratepayer risk — the fights that drove 142 coordinated protests across 42 states on July 18. A shock absorber makes a rack grid-safe. It does not make a neighbor feel safer.

Convina's view: Silicon Valley spent two years arguing about who owns the best model. Texas just proved the harder fight is who owns the power signature.
